Strong Bonds for Couples

Brainerd, Minn. --  Strong Bonds is a weekend retreat for military couples to reconnect and focus on their marriage. Recently, for the members of the 133rd Airlift Wing, the two night getaway was held at Cragun's Resort in Brainerd, Minn. The workshop addresses issues like problem solving, communication styles, friendship in a marriage and relaxation styles.

The support for this program comes from the highest levels in the military because it is recognized that strong marriages make for strong and healthy members and families.

"We have come to recognized that potentially one of the greatest stressors in military life is brokenness in relationships ...and one of the greatest supports in military life is a strong marriage," said Senior Chaplain (Lt. Col.) John Echert.

"The Strong Bonds for couples is intended to strengthen their bond in marriage. It is not simply for marriages that are struggling, but are intended for any and all marriages," said Echert. "A great part of the focus is upon communication skills. How to work through the issues within marriage and how to better support each other in marriage. "

The couples had time to enjoy the company of each other and get to know other members from around the base. They were able to enjoy the amenities at the resort and gain valuable tips and tricks to aid in strengthening their relationship.

"A time out for your relationship is like a tune-up or basic maintenance for your car," said Senior Airman Jessica Lewellen, a broadcast journalist at the 133rd Airlift Wing. "If you wait until something is wrong to examine the car the problem may be more serious and expensive...don't wait until something is wrong to invest in your relationship."

Strong Bonds is professionally created program by civilians that have been adapted for the relationship styles and requirements military members have. Strong Bonds the umbrella program that supports many other workshops for married couples, families and singles. The 133rd Airlift Wing will have Strong Bonds for families and singles later this year.
